David Archuleta dropped wisdom on Apple’s ProudRadio with Hunter Kelly, sharing advice for those coming out and their families. Catch Episode 62 for the full episode! 🎙️

Here’s a part of the interview we loved:

“Having my mom’s support was really huge,” Archuleta said. “She didn’t support me at first. I said, ‘mom, you don’t have to accept. I know it goes against your beliefs, what I’m doing. And I know what you’ve been taught—I was taught the same things.

I’m not going to be mad at you. I couldn’t accept myself for the longest time. It took me a long time to figure out how to see myself differently. And I know it will take time for you to see me differently. I don’t need you to accept me. I do need you to respect that I’m doing what’s the best thing for me in my life.’”

He added, “I tried to stay in my religion. And I just thought this is too much—it doesn’t make sense. I see a lot of contradictions. And when I said I was leaving the church, my mom said, Hey, I’m going to leave the church too. If you’re going to hell, we’re all going to hell together.’

And that is when I wrote the song, Hell Together.”

Two excellent takeaways:

1️⃣ When you come out to your family and friends, give them some grace if their acceptance isn’t as immediate as you’d hoped for. It took you a long time to come out—to understand who and what you are. It will take your friends and family some time to catch up. Give them some grace.

2️⃣ Parental support is powerful! Parents: you won’t have all the answers and you won’t do all the right things. The best way to overcome those challenges is by continuing to learn and implement what you’re learning.

A U.S. District Judge has temporarily halted the Trump administration’s policy banning “X” gender markers for nonbinary individuals and restricting changes to gender markers on passports. The ruling, issued by Judge Julia Kobick, comes in response to a lawsuit filed by the ACLU on behalf of six transgender and nonbinary plaintiffs.

The policy, enacted via a January executive order, defined sex strictly as male or female, rejecting gender transitions. This move aligned with conservative views but clashed with medical consensus and policies under the Biden administration. The ACLU argued it would prevent transgender, nonbinary, and intersex Americans from obtaining accurate passports, effectively erasing their identities.

Judge Kobick ruled that the policy fails to meet constitutional standards, stating it’s based on “irrational prejudice toward transgender Americans” and violates equal protection. She also found it “arbitrary and capricious” and non-compliant with federal procedures. The injunction ensures the plaintiffs can obtain passports reflecting their gender identity while the lawsuit continues.

“This is a critical victory against discrimination,” said ACLU attorney Li Nowlin-Sohl. The ACLU plans to push for the ruling to apply to all transgender and nonbinary Americans.

Real-world impacts are already clear: one plaintiff’s passport was returned with an incorrect male designation, while another awaits their passport, risking missed family events and professional commitments. Another faced accusations of using fake documents due to mismatched IDs.

The Trump admin argued the policy doesn’t violate constitutional rights and that plaintiffs can still travel. However, the ACLU highlighted the harm of inconsistent documents, which can out transgender individuals and create barriers.

The judge did not address the growing number of transgender Americans whose passports have been confiscated, invalidated, or reissued with incorrect gender markers. The Trump administration will likely appeal this decision, as it has with many other court rulings against the federal government’s handling of LGBTQ-related executive orders.
