WASHINGTON D.C. | The Kennedy Center is closing…again, hours after a federal judge blocked another attempt to put Donald Trump’s name on the national cultural institution created as a living memorial to John F. Kennedy.

For more than half a century, the Kennedy Center has been one of America’s most important homes for theater, opera, dance and public arts. In recent years, that stage also became increasingly important for LGBTQ artists and audiences. Trump’s takeover in February 2025 changed that quickly.

He removed board members, installed allies, became chairman and promised there would be “NO MORE DRAG SHOWS.” The International Pride Orchestra lost its performance. WorldPride events were canceled or moved, including programming tied to the AIDS Memorial Quilt and drag story time. Capital Pride ended its relationship with the center.

The turmoil spread beyond LGBTQ programming. Artists canceled appearances, “Hamilton” pulled its planned run, subscriptions fell 36 percent and ticket sales declined. After Trump’s board added his name to the building, internal records showed ticket revenue and fundraising falling further, leaving a projected $23 million deficit.

The fight over Trump’s name became tied directly to the center’s future, especially after a federal judge ruled in May that the board had no authority to rename the congressionally designated memorial and ordered Trump’s name removed. The board then proposed new Trump inscriptions and renaming the plaza for him, arguing that recognizing Trump was critical to fundraising and avoiding financial collapse.

On Tuesday, Judge Christopher Cooper rejected that effort too. Hours later, Trump’s board voted to close the Kennedy Center again, admitting they are out of money, can’t make payroll and performers are not interested in bookings.

The building that has served as the nation’s performing arts center since 1971 will now close its main doors while Trump’s lawyers will once again try to find ways to bring in new revenue.
