Kids understand and recognize love long before adults teach them which kinds they’re supposed to be outraged by.

Be well.

I love it when the Republicans promote activities with “family values” and feature lesbian moms on their flyers.

U.S. Rep. Andy Ogles has spent much of his short congressional career deciding who belongs in America—and now it comes to an end.

Ogles is no stranger to controversy. In June, his official congressional X account offered a particularly ugly answer about gay people:

“Homosexuality has no place in America. Happy Nuclear Family Month.”

His post went up at the beginning of Pride Month and drew enough criticism that even members of his own Republican party condemned it. Ogles eventually deleted it, blaming a member of his communications staff and said the employee had been reprimanded.

Gay people weren’t his only target. Earlier this year, Ogles also wrote that “Muslims don’t belong in American society” and declared that “pluralism is a lie.” He has repeatedly used his office and social media accounts to attack LGBTQ people, Muslims and other Americans who fall outside his narrow definition of who should belong here.

On Thursday, Republican voters in Tennessee’s newly redrawn 5th Congressional District ended his bid for a third term and fired the Republican. Former Tennessee Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Hatcher defeated Ogles in the Republican primary despite Ogles having Donald Trump’s endorsement and a last-minute Election Day boost from the president—it wasn’t enough to save him.

The loss brings an unusually fitting end to Ogles’ time in Congress. He spent two terms using his public office to draw lines around America and announce which people he believed belonged on the other side of them.

In January, he’ll leave that office behind while the gay and Muslim Americans he targeted remain exactly where they were all along: still American.
