Lindsey Graham, one of the Republican Party’s most influential senators, has died at the age of 71 following a brief illness.

Born in Central, South Carolina, Graham overcame many hardships early in life. After losing both of his parents while in college, he became the guardian of his younger sister, finished law school, served as an Air Force attorney, and went on to build a political career that lasted more than three decades.

Elected to Congress in 1994 and to the U.S. Senate in 2002, Graham became one of Washington’s most recognizable conservative voices. He was known for his influence on national security, judicial appointments, and foreign policy. His political transformation was one of the most dramatic in recent history—from calling Donald Trump “unfit for office” during the 2016 campaign to becoming one of Trump’s closest allies.

Graham never married, had no children, and rarely discussed his personal life. For decades, rumors about his sexuality followed him, fueled by his lifelong bachelor status and Washington gossip. Graham repeatedly denied rumors about being gay, and no evidence ever confirmed them.

The speculation resurfaced last year when conservative activist Laura Loomer publicly claimed she had been told by people close to Donald Trump that Graham was gay. Loomer never presented evidence to support the claim, and Graham never responded publicly to her allegations.

Whether the rumors were true is likely something only Lindsey Graham ever knew.

What history can judge, however, is his public record. Graham helped shape conservative policies—especially on LGBTQ issues while remaining one of the most enigmatic figures in American politics.
