When “the scriptures” somehow sound exactly like your hateful comments about LGBTQ+ people, that’s not scripture speaking for itself. That’s ventriloquism. You’re moving the dummy’s mouth and pretending we can’t see your hand.

And because there are always a pew full of people who will say, “I’m just quoting scripture” that is usually what people say right after they’ve chosen which scriptures to quote, which scripture to ignore, and who they want it to hit. Psst: that’s the ventriloquist part.

None of us are wondering why the same verses only seem to come out when you need them to condemn someone.

Self-love is not vanity. It is usually where compassion starts. 🤗

When you can look at yourself honestly, forgive what needs forgiving, and stop treating your own pain like something shameful, you become less threatened by other people living honestly too.

Maybe that is why some people have such strong feelings against LGBTQ people. Maybe the anger is not really about us. Maybe it is about the parts of themselves they were taught to fear, deny, punish, or hide.

When you make peace with yourself, it becomes a lot harder to make war with someone else.
