Life in the City, a United Methodist church in Austin, Texas’ Travis Heights neighborhood, has been vandalized again.

Church leaders said members arrived Sunday morning and found the church’s Pride mural defaced with the words “Pride 1st Sin.” The mural was not random decoration. It was painted after the same church was targeted last August, when someone tore down its Progress Pride flag and spray-painted “Pride was the 1st sin” on the church building.

At the time, the vandalism was aimed at the Christian church because it openly welcomed LGBTQ people. This latest incident follows the same pattern.

Life in the City describes itself as a radically inclusive, affirming faith community. After the first vandalism, the church did not quietly back away or soften its position. Instead, members responded by creating a large Pride mural outside the church as a public statement that LGBTQ people were welcome there.

Now that mural has been targeted too.

The church’s artistic director, Crystal Paull, said Life in the City remains committed to loving its neighbors and supporting LGBTQIA+ people and other marginalized communities despite the repeated vandalism.

This is what happens when anti-LGBTQ rhetoric is treated like faith instead of hostility. It does not stay in the comment sections or political speeches. It shows up on church walls. It destroys flags. It tries to intimidate people who are simply trying to worship, gather, and belong.

A church in Texas openly welcomed queer people, got attacked for it, they responded with visibility instead of fear, and it was attacked again for refusing to make itself smaller.

Now which of these actions are more Christlike?

Cinco de Mayo. Taco Tuesday. Same day.

The grills will be hot, the margaritas will be strong (or mocktails in Provo, Utah), and someone—somewhere—is going to take it way too seriously.

Stay calm. Pace yourself. And celebrate with good friends. 🌈

You’re ready.
We trained for this. 🌮

Happy Cinco de Mayo, amigos!
