Coming Out | I kept telling myself “no, he’s a guy, and you’re a guy…”

Posted 7 years ago Tagged

I guess my story starts in 5th grade, although I didn’t know I was gay at the time. There was this guy in my group of friends that I had a dream about. Not a completely appropriate dream might I … Read the rest here

Lani Ka'ahumanu was born in 1943 in Edmonton, Alberta, and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. By her early twenties, she was married with two children. In 1974, she came out as a lesbian, ended her marriage, and moved back home to San Francisco. She was thirty-one, starting over, and building a life in a community that finally felt like home.

Then she fell in love with a man and he was bisexual too. The community that had welcomed her as a lesbian called her a “traitor”. She became the "lesbian who fell from grace." At one meeting, a fellow activist announced that her body was tainted.

Determined and focused, Ka'ahumanu built something new.

In 1983, she co-founded BiPol, the first bisexual political organization in the United States. She joined the National LGBTQ Task Force board as the first out bisexual member. She spent ten years building a movement that recognized that bisexual people existed and mattered.

In 1993, she organized a national campaign to add "bisexual" to the March on Washington. When she took the stage as the only bisexual speaker, they had scheduled her last and cut her time to two minutes. She opened by saying: "Aloha, my name is Lani Ka'ahumanu, and it ain't over til the bisexual speaks."

She used those two minutes to describe the erasure she'd experienced—not from the world outside, but from the movement she'd helped build. And she made sure that after that day, no one could pretend bisexual people weren't there.

October is LGBTQ+ History Month, a time to recognize the people who fought for our rights, shaped our culture and made life better for queer communities—including those whose stories are rarely told.

You can’t control every cruel thing your kids will hear. But you can make sure they never have to wonder whether they’re loved at home.

If we can’t have decorum at the highest levels of our government, we can ensure it exists at the kitchen table.
