A new multi-year Williams Institute study from UCLA School of Law explores religiosity among LGBT adults in the U.S., including the revelation that an estimated 107,000 queer people identify as Latter-day Saints (Mormon).

Based on the Gallup Daily Tracking Survey, the also study examines the role of religion in LGBT lives, classifying individuals as not religious, moderately religious, or highly religious based on the importance of religion and frequency of service attendance.

Nationwide, about 5.3 million LGBTQ+ adults are religious, with 3,063,000 moderately religious and 2,230,000 highly religious. Among these, 107,000 Latter-day Saint LGBT adults form a significant group, representing 2% of the nation’s religious LGBT adults. The report highlights their diversity, spanning all ages, racial-ethnic groups, and regions, including married and single individuals, parents, and those in rural and urban areas.

Religiosity patterns mirror broader national trends: older adults (64.9% of those 65+), Black LGBT adults (over 70%), and those in the South (54.1%) are more likely to be religious. While specific demographics for Mormon LGBT adults aren’t detailed, these trends suggest they are similarly diverse. For Latter-day Saints, faith often intersects with identity, with many navigating both thoughtfully.

For Latter-day Saints who may have forgotten that a portion of their community is queer, this report is a reminder of the 107,000 LGBQ+ adults who share their religious convictions. Their presence underscores the need for inclusion and understanding within congregations, affirming that queer Latter-day Saints are integral to the church’s diverse fabric.

This study highlights religion’s significance for many LGBT individuals. For more insights, visit the Williams Institute to download the full report.

The real question isn’t how a 9-year-old knows they’re gay—it’s how other kids that age already know to bully them for coming out. đŸłïžâ€đŸŒˆ

This powerful truth reminds us to challenge prejudice early and teach kids love, not hate.

Let’s create a world where every child feels safe to be themselves. Visibility and support matter. Allies, we need you.
