A recent update to section 38.1.1 of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Handbook specifically forbids “speaking of sexual orientation” and “personal characteristics” in meetings and other church events.

Hold up.

Are these rules for straight Mormons or just the gay ones? Because here are some examples of how straight Saints share their sexual orientation in every chapel, every testimony meeting, and in every classroom (without even realizing it):

Introducing their spouse: “This is my wife, Sarah.” or “My husband and I went on a trip last weekend.”

Talking about crushes: “I had the biggest crush on Johnny Lingo when I was younger.”

Wedding announcements: “We’re so excited to get married next June!”

Discussing future plans: “I can’t wait to have kids with my husband someday.”

Dating preferences: “I only date women.” or “I’m looking for a girlfriend.”

Sunday school: Sharing anniversary pictures or date night photos with expressions like “Love my husband!”

Testimony meetings: “My dad always told me to find a nice girl to settle down with.” “I married my wife in the temple.” “Our eternal family.” “We can’t wait for grandchildren.” “My husband and I would be remiss if we didn’t share our testimony of our most recent vacation.”

💯 of these examples of heterosexuality would be expressions of orientation. These are all ways straight people (even in Mormon churches) naturally express their sexuality in daily life—often without even thinking about it.

This is one of my favorite photos from Stonewall.

The people in this image knew they were risking arrest simply for being LGBTQ+. And yet—they stood their ground, outside the boarded-up Stonewall Inn, smiling in the face of a world that wanted to erase them.

I think about this moment often. Especially in times like today when the majority targets the minority for political talking points.

When we picture the elders of the LGBTQ+ movement, we sometimes imagine older, seasoned activists leading the charge. But look at the people in this photo—they’re barely old enough to legally drink.

The Stonewall Riots weren’t led by people with decades of experience; they were led by young people, many still in their teens and early twenties, who refused to accept a world where queerness meant living in fear.

Marsha P. Johnson (23), Sylvia Rivera (17), and countless unnamed LGBTQ+ youth stood up against oppression and sparked a movement that would change history.

And today, I see a new generation that carries the same fire. You are the ones shaping the future—demanding justice, speaking out, showing up, and refusing to be silent. Every protest, every vote, every act of courage, and every moment of unapologetic existence continues the legacy of those who came before us.

Stonewall wasn’t the end—it was the beginning. And now, it’s your turn. The fight isn’t over, but if history has taught us anything, it’s that young people have always been on the front lines of change.
