In an interview published ahead of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ semi-annual General Conference, Elder Steven E. Snow, emeritus General Authority, admits there is a chasm between gay Mormons and the Mormon church.

Speaking to the Salt Lake Tribune, Snow told religion reporter, Peggy Fletcher Stack that he has two gay granddaughters, both he reports, have left the church. Snow continued, “It causes me great sadness that we don’t have a place for everyone. They feel like there is nothing there for them."

Snow, a democrat and environmentalist, never shied from battling unpopular opinions among other General Authorities in the conservative church. As the former Church Historian from 2012-2019, Snow oversaw the publishing of the Joseph Smith Papers, the publishing of the Gospel Topics Essays, and other efforts to bring the Church’s history to light.

Regarding the November 2015 LGBTQ policy, Snow told the Tribune, “I was surprised by the policy and was quite delighted when it was reversed. … I thought it was unnecessary, and I think it caused unnecessary hurt during the time it was in place. I was pleased to see President Russell M. Nelson revoke it.”

Still he concluded, even the recent Transgender Policy seems to him to be, “off base”. He believes the Church, and specifically Elder Dallin H. Oaks, is “try[ing] to find common ground.”

“It’s a very difficult place for them to be. President Oaks continues to talk about gays in his General Conference talks. It’s as if he wants to draw a bright line that this is the way it is and there is not going to be a relaxing of that policy. It seems to me, that is what he’s trying [to articulate].”
