A few years ago, a seemingly desperate gay dad from Arizona reached out to me to share his story and to ask for help navigating a path I’d walked just a few years before.

He was divorcing his wife, coming out and he feared all the same fears so common to men in our situation.

His story was familiar: mission, marriage, children and righteous church service were the elixir to solving the homosexual epidemic—a ‘problem’ he was taught he suffered from.

Cameron made it through.
His family made it through.
And together, his friends and family celebrated his beautiful marriage to his husband.

Nestled in the backyard of his parents’ very Mormon home, was a cornucopia of believers and non-believers, nuanced and orthodox, friend and family—all gathering to celebrate love and the institution of marriage.

Cam and Tav’s wedding is another testament that it does get better. That making difficult decisions in the spirit of authenticity is necessary and that even when you least expect it, there will be a community of supporters who will collectively lift you up.

Citing family and professional responsibilities, Kera Birkeland, the outspoken Republican representative in the Utah Legislature, announced her resignation effective January 10, 2025.

Birkeland has been associated with legislative actions that many perceive as opposing LGBTQ+ rights, particularly concerning transgender individuals.

She sponsored legislation banning transgender girls from participating in high school sports, a measure that was initially vetoed by Utah governor, Spencer Cox but later enacted after the legislature overrode the veto. This law has faced legal challenges and is currently under litigation.

Additionally, Birkeland introduced a bill regulating restroom access for transgender individuals, which restricts which bathrooms and locker rooms transgender people can use. To date, not one single transgender person has been found violating the law—despite more than 12,000 complaints filed.
