Last summer, Trump’s Justice Department sent UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh a sweeping subpoena seeking information about transgender patients under 19 who had received gender-affirming care. The records included names and identifying information, medical and psychological records, intake documents, diagnoses, parental authorizations and information connected to puberty blockers and hormone therapy.

Parents whose children had been treated at the hospital went to federal court rather than allow those records to be turned over. On Christmas Eve, Judge Cathy Bissoon blocked the subpoena, finding that the government’s demand for deeply private patient information carried signs of improper intent.

The DOJ later offered to accept anonymized records instead, the court rejected that request too. Bissoon described the government’s effort as “unprecedented” and said its rhetoric reflected “callous indifference, if not abject cruelty.”

The Justice Department appealed those rulings to the Third Circuit earlier this year, keeping the families in a legal fight over whether the federal government could gain access to information about their children’s medical care. On Monday, the DOJ abruptly asked the appeals court to dismiss its own case. It gave no reason for the reversal, and the families who challenged the subpoenas do not oppose the dismissal.

UPMC was just one hospital in a much larger effort by Trump to target the trans community. The Justice Department said last year that it had issued more than 20 subpoenas to doctors and hospitals providing gender-affirming care to minors.

Similar demands have been blocked or narrowed by federal judges in several states, no hospital has been forced to disclose their records.

The Third Circuit still has to formally grant the DOJ’s request to dismiss the appeal. Assuming it does, the lower-court rulings remain in place and the medical records the government spent more than a year trying to obtain will stay out of Trump’s hands. ... See MoreSee Less

Robin Williams gave us Armand in The Birdcage, one of the warmest, funniest gay fathers ever put on screen, and later returned to queer roles in The Night Listener and Boulevard. And we will always love him as Mrs. Doubtfire. He never treated those characters like a joke or a risk. He simply let them be people, and a lot of LGBTQ viewers loved him for it.

When Robin died by suicide in 2014, it was hard to understand how someone who had given so much joy could have been hurting so badly.

So today, twelve years after his death, remember Robin for the laughter, the characters, and the kindness.
